You can make a leg by having a piece of wood cut to the correct length at your local hardware store. Many companies offer metal center support slats that are far superior to wood slats. For the best possible support, choose a metal support designed for use with wood beds.

Following are some guidelines to follow for ensuring the proper support for your new mattress set: You need at least one rigid center support bar with one leg to the floor for queen size bedding and at least two rigid center support bars with legs to the floor for king size. Wood center support slats should be at least 3/4 inch plywood. If yours are not at least 3/4 inch plywood, consider a metal bed slat system like a Strong Arm, Bed Beam, or Bed Bridge support system. Twin and full size beds do not usually require additional center supports, but with the extra heavy weight of today’s bedding, it sure wouldn’t hurt to add a center support bar. In choosing quality bed sheets, three elements must be considered. The first is the kind of material, next is the thread count and last but not least is the touch or the way the linen feels to the touch.

Bed sheets made of 100% cotton are higher quality than polyester because cotton is soft and cool to the skin. By capillary action, cotton absorbs moisture away from the body, thus prevents dampness and danker feel. While polyester bears well and does not need to be ironed but the gentle touch of the fabric to your skin makes the difference.

Based on appearance and staple lengths, there are four main types of cotton, they are: Short, medium, long and extra long staple. The longer the staple, the finer is the fabric, the best consideration in choosing a cotton type. Most cotton-producing countries grow medium to long fiber cotton. Cotton with fibers 7/8″ or 1 ¼” are not suited for good sheets. Egyptian cotton has an extra long staple about 1 ½” long and silky fiber. Pima cotton is an Egyptian variety developed by U.S. cotton growers. For their softness and durability, Egyptian cotton is preferable for bed sheets.

The higher the thread count, the finer is the quality of the bed sheet. Thread count is the number of threads per square inch. To make strong but thin threads, it takes long cotton fibers. It takes these thin silky threads, to make high thread count fabrics. Good quality fabric starts with 200 thread count. European sheets go much higher than 310, the highest thread count in the United States.

After a number of washings, high thread count bed sheets made from a long staple cotton, increase in luster and softness. It is not pure cotton if after several washing, sheets actually become firmer. The touch or the hand in the sheet is a good test.

There are numerous other factors that contribute to the quality and feel of bed sheets. Thread count and cotton variety are only indicators of good quality. One important factor is the type of weave. They say that Italians are good weavers. The finishing touches of the fabric must also be considered, such as, combing and carding which cleans and straightens the fiber and removing the shorter ones. The dyeing process can also affect the touch or the feel of the fabric. The water, the heat, and other chemicals can achieve a different effect on the fabric as well. All these affect the feel of the fabric against your skin.
